The Association of Moremi Women (AMW)
History of Moremi Women
How it all started

The Association of Moremi Women (AMW) was formed in Southern California, in the fall of 1997, to unite Yoruba women (whether by birth or marriage) and to promote the understanding of Yoruba culture both at home and abroad, through social and educational activities.

Some of the goals of AMW include but not limited to promoting the Yoruba cultural heritage; fostering the economic and academic advancement of Yoruba children everywhere, and providing support for Yoruba-owned businesses in Southern California.

History of Moremi Ajansoro

Moremi Ajansoro is a famous Yoruba woman of Nigerian History.  She lived in Ile-Ife during the pre-colonial era and made a huge achievement that cannot be ignored; this is why Moremi herself cannot be ignored.

She was a beautiful woman who displayed bravery by making big personal sacrifices to help everybody else.  She was a great amazon in the politics of Ile- Ife.  She made her vows to the deity of the river Esinminrin to provide freedom for her people.  The people of Ile-Ife were being terrified by the people that continuously raided and plundered their river.  Moremi fulfilled her vows to sacrifice her own son so that the people of Ile-Ife would be safe.  She really is a true Heroine.

In Moremi’s honor, there is a celebration of Odun Edi/Moremi festival, which is held yearly in Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba Civilization, and the mythical cradle of the universe.

The Association of Moremi Women acquired our name from this famous Yoruba Heroine for her bravery and for saving her people.
